Nothing was there and then in the blink of my eyes it was there…..a huge lump on the right side of my neck. It was a Saturday night. My husband, being the caretaker he is, insisted that I call Kaiser first thing Monday morning. I told him it would probably be gone by Monday. Nope, it was actually bigger by Monday morning. The first Doc saw me on Wednesday. She did a blood test to check my thyroid levels. They were perfect. No hypo or hyper thyroid going on. They did an ultrasound and found 3 nodules or the medical name Goiter. Not sure I like that word. Has a strange sound to it! These Goiters were 2 centimeters, 3 centimeters and 5.1 centimeters in size. She immediately referred me to an Endocrinologist. Anything over 4 centimeters they are concerned about. I showed up at the Endocrinologist appointment the next week and had a biopsy done. I’m sure glad the details weren’t offered to me before the appointment! My husband watched as they inserted a needle in my neck three times to get tissue from each nodules. The report came back negative for cancer but I was told later that the big goiter they still can’t be completely sure about until they remove it. Remove it? Yes, it needs to be removed because it will grow and cause difficulty breathing and swallowing. These are pretty important body functions, so let’s get those babies out of there! Off to the neck and head surgeon I go! I’m happy I was not told that he would be putting a tube up my nose and down my throat to see of the nodules were up against my vocal cords. That was a lovely experience! Good news, they are not effecting my vocal cords! Now I wait for a surgery date. I know that all will be well. So why am I sharing this with you?
It kind of shocked me how fast these goiters appeared. I was told by two doctors that they don’t just appear, it takes months and months for them to develop. Because of what we do for a living, I beg to differ. I would have noticed the smallest lump in my neck nonetheless a 5.1 centimeter lump!
I’m sharing so you’ll be aware when touching your clients. From the day you read this moving forward, please really feel your client. Don’t just touch….feel! Be aware of any little or big thing that you feel and let that client know.
Goiters are more prominent in women than in men and typically in women of middle age. I’m definitely middle age at 58! More often than not it’s not cancer but boy as Estheticians we sure don’t want to be the Esty that didn’t feel it on a client and it turns out to be a bad diagnosis.
One other thing I wanted to share is that I spoke with both Physicians I’ve seen about the pieces of equipment we use on our clients and on ourselves. I wanted to know if anything we do (LED, microcurrent, rf, ultrasound) could have caused this or could it make it worse. The answer from both Docs was no it can not. That was a relief to me. I really didn’t want to hear that all the anti-aging things we do could be the cause of this health issue. So rest assure that nothing you’re doing to a client will bring about anything like this!
I’m going to keep documenting this process with more videos and posts. I will begin using LED right after the surgery to speed up my healing.
Thanks for reading and please heed what I said about being aware of your clients!
Thank you for sharing this with us. Manifesting healing energy to send your way.
Thank you for sharing this Shelley. Great information. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thank goodness you are ok. Blessings to you and yours
Thank you for sharing. Best of luck in a speedy recovery.
With a goiter it is indicative that the thyroid was/is NOT optimal. If they only checked your TSH (a pituitary hormone) and pronounced you healthy they are mistaken. Especially in the presence of a goiter or nodules. Please educate yourself on thyroid as so many physicians (sadly including Endocrinologists) do not properly diagnose nor manage thyroid. Be sure they check your free T3 and free T4, reverse T3 and TPO antibodies. Check out stopthethyroidmadness.com to really learn what tests are important and why the (sadly) revered TSH is NOT the best test! I say this as a 25+ year mismanaged thyroid patient who decided to help herself after years of mismanagement to the point of disability. Best of luck to you!
Yes to everything Maggie Crabtree said. I had such a similar experience. But, am so, so much better now that I got my insurance to pay for my functional doc!
Agree. And don’t trust the doctors who are nothing short of a trades person and nothing more-on anything on esthty equipment. They are not certain of this either.
Do take himalayan sea salt b/c salt actually regulates thyroid and if you are not getting enough of it you will only get more thyroid issues. Read the holistic doctors papers on the Thyroid and Iodine: huge link there!
American doctors are Wrong, uneducated on nutrition and often give bad advice. They are only disease managers in my opinion. https://drlindseyberkson.com/episode-123-thyroid-and-iodine-with-dr-david-brownstein/
Sorry to hear this Shelley. Sending prayers for a quick recovery.

Thank you, for sharing Shelley. A few years ago, I found a lump on my client near her throat. It turned out to be cancer. The good news is that it wasn’t anywhere else, and surgery was all she had to endure. Prayers for a speedy recovery. Love you!

Hi Shelley! So sorry you have to do surgery. Ugh. Sending healing light to you. I do not want to discount your doctor’s comments that everything we do is safe, nor be an alarmist, however even on the American Cancer Society page they are still doing research on low levels of RF. I only say this because I am always trying to be hyper aware and don’t want to rule out even minor things that can add up over time. I think we should all as estheticians pay very close attention to this. I wish you all the best! Quote from the site “If RF radiation is absorbed in large enough amounts by materials containing water, such as food, fluids, and body tissues, it can produce heat. This can lead to burns and tissue damage. Although RF radiation does not cause cancer by damaging DNA in cells the way ionizing radiation does, there has been concern that some forms of non-ionizing radiation might have biological effects that could result in cancer in some circumstances.”
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Same happened to me, I just received my biopsy results and it was also negative for C.
I am not removing my 2 nodules, instead I will just keep monitoring. I have heard from some other women that like us, had benign nodules, were treated with natural medicine and it shrank or went away.
I belong to a group on Facebook of women that share their experiences and seek for advices. https://www.facebook.com/groups/153507861982246/
Have you gotten a second opinion or talked with a naturopathic? I am going to see one next week.
God bless you and we will keep in touch 🙂
Thank you . Good luck . God bless you and your family! You are a very beautiful person! Be well ….2019 ☮️

Hello? I had a rather large goiter many years ago , The endocrinologist shrunk it with Synthroid. Check out all options , before surgery! Feel Better!
Hi Shelley sorry you have to go through surgery. But I totally agree with some of the others that goiters usually come from mismanaged Thyroid issues. Wishing you the best and a speedy recovery.
Hi Shelley, Thank you for letting us know. Will be sending healing prayers your way.
Bonnie Rempher Just read your email and am so glad to hear that they can take care of it.
Sending lots of love and prayers for a speedy recovery. Please keep us all in the know.
Hi Shelley! My mother and aunts had goiters removed in the 1960s. Indiana was in the “goiter belt” as they used to call it. I remember it being something about an iodine deficiency. “They” started adding iodine to table salt in the 1920s to help alleviate the problem. Just a little goiter trivia to lighten the day. 😉
You and your caretakers are in my prayers for a successful surgery and a full and speedy recovery. We all love and need you!
Shelly. So sorry for all this. Wishing you the best. Nice, speedy recovery.
Blessings.

Peace,

Whoa! I just read this, I too have them in my neck and get ultrasounds yearly for measurements and I don’t like the name either Goiter yuck! Healing thoughts your way!
I have had a goiter!! Haha, my dumb ass switched out the table salt for pink Himalayan, which is not iodized… and I then got a goiter for not getting iodine to my poor little thyroid. Mine was beyond huge when I finally figured out what was causing it… So I went to a health food store, grabbed some liquid iodine and started taking it like i was gonna die… and my thyroid went back to normal pretty quick, within a month.
I hope everything goes well for you! So odd that it just popped up with no reason.
Jiny….thank you for sharing this!! I have been putting off and putting off the surgery. Just not feeling lke having my neck cut in to. I’m going to get some liquid iodine today and give it a try! Thanks!
