Ingredient Spotlight: Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract

Date

In-Depth Spotlight of the Ingredient Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract:

Apple fruit extract is a combination of the whole apple (peel, juice, leaves and seeds), this beneficial ingredient can be found in a variety of skin care products due to its rich composition of phytochemicals. Apple fruit extract contains several types of flavonoids (catechins, flavanols, and quercetin). Flavonoids possess antioxidant activity, which helps to protect the skin from free radical damage caused by UV exposure, pollution, and other environmental factors. Apple fruit extract also contains pectin, a type of fiber. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science found that apple pectin can promote epidermal growth and improve the skin barrier function.

Benefits of Apple Extract:

 Anti-Aging:

It is high in antioxidants to protect your skin from free radical damage which in turn helps to slow down the signs of aging and to help it maintain youthful elasticity for longer.

Exfoliating:

Apple extract is loaded with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), malic acid being the most abundant, these acids break up the proteins that hold the skin cells together, helping to slough off the dead skin that gives your skin a dull appearance.

Hydrating:

Apples contain essential fatty acids that hydrate and plump the skin.  The AHAs and carbohydrates in apple extract are also great for holding in hydration. This helps by creating a barrier on the skin that reduces water loss without clogging pores.

 Astringent:

Astringents not only balance the oils in your skin but they help shrink your pores. Smaller pores mean a smoother complexion as well as less opportunity for dirt and oil to sneak beneath the surface. Apple extract has natural astringent properties, making it one of the best ways to even out your skin tone.

Brighten and lighten complexions:

The key active ingredient in apple extract is a vitamin C derivative that claims to reduce dark spots over time and even out skin tone.
